KLINMAN-500

KLINMAN 500A / 500PN / 500N is a carboxylic / carboxylate homo/co-polymer with specifically selected molecular weight required to be used in different laundry detergent and other liquid, powder, or tablet cleaning formulations.The product is available in low (acidic) pH (KLINMAN™ 500A) as well as partially (KLINMAN 500PN) or fully neutralized (KLINMAN 500N) liquid forms. The low pH gives bulkiness to the powder formulation but requires little attention when mixed with alkaline additives.

The product works on the following main chemistry principles and gives maximum cleaning effect to the subject (for example fabrics) without altering its intrinsic properties like colour, brightness etc

KLINMAN 500N works on the principle of threshold effect which requires very less amount of product to keep precipitates of inorganic salts (like Calcium Carbonate / phosphate / sulphates / silicate as well as alike salts of Magnesium, Strontium, Barium etc) in soluble form thereby inhibiting precipitation of minerals.

Left: The concentration of a solution supersaturated with calcium ions is reduced over time without the addition of antiscaling agent as calcium ions from the solution are transformed into particulate calcium-containing crystals. The crystals grow and become visible as a scale. At the same time the calcium concentration in solution falls to the saturation concentration [SC].

Right: If polymer is added to the system this adsorbs on crystal surfaces and inhibits their further growth. The calcium concentration of the solution remains constant as no further calcium ions can be transformed to the solid state. However, the calcium concentration is now above the saturation concentration [SC]: A supersaturated solution is stabilised.

The effect of a polymer (product) is based on disruption to the crystal structure, the growth kinetics and the nuclear growth kinetics of the crystal structure being formed. The polyacrylates cover the surface of the crystals in a flat position and are not grown over so quickly by the next layer. Irregularities are formed in the crystal structure and due to the rounded edges agglomeration tendency of the crystals is also reduced.

It can be shown microscopically that crystals remain smaller in the presence of KLINMAN-500 and, in contrast to the typical sharp-edged pure crystals, display markedly rounder structures. Crystal that have grown irregularly may be more brittle than the crystals formed without KLINMAN-500 and therefore easier to keep the crystals (minerals) in dissolved form.

The dispersion mechanisms depend on the medium (here water) and the substances to be dispersed, but are nevertheless always based on the adsorption of the polyelectrolyte on the particles to be dispersed. If hydrophilic particles such as calcium carbonate or iron oxide are to be dispersed, stabilisation is based on the build-up of a double electric layer between the particle and the polyelectrolyte, such as polyacrylic acid. As the particles have the same charge they repel one another. The dispersion is charge-stabilised. In the case of the dispersion of non-ionic or hydrophobic particles, such as dirt particles or soot, the effect is based on steric stabilisation. Through the adsorption of the long-chained polymers on the particle surface the attractive forces (van-der-Waals forces) between the particles are reduced. The adsorbed barrier should lie in the area of 100 Angstroms at least. For this reason only high-molecular compounds such as polymers can be considered for this form of stabilisation.

A practical consequence of this phenomenon is the so-called „product consumption“. By this is meant the loss or consumption of polymer during the application. Product consumption is generally higher than the share caused by adsorption on particles because a certain share is also adsorbed on the pipe walls. However, after a certain time the system should achieve a state of equilibrium and no further consumption should occur.

Due to the disturbance to the crystal lattice structure the formation of stable crystal crusts is inhibited.

To obtain an optimal effectiveness this polymer should be used at levels between 250 and 1000 ppm in the wash baths (household) and 100 to 500 ppm for industrial purposes. This will generally correspond to 2-6% (as is) in liquid formulation. KLINMAN 500N is designed to be used in phosphate based or phosphate free detergents, the latter based on carbonate, silicate, citrate and NTA.KLINMAN 500N is a suitable candidate for alkaline and chlorinated cleaners.In addition, KLINMAN 500N can be incorporated in carbonate rich fabric wash powders, and at low level in liquid laundry formulations.

The following wash performances were carried out in our laboratory which are self explanatory: (A) = Detergent with polymer (B) = Reference cloth (C) = Detergent without polymer CONDITIONS: TEMP 65°c, WATER: Hardness-3600, Tds-7300, Silica-60ppm, pH-9.3, POLYMER DOSE=1%

KLINMAN-550

KLINMAN 550A / 550PN / 550N is a phosphonate available in various liquid forms precisely selected to be used in different laundry detergent and other liquid, powder, or tablet cleaning formulations. The product is available in low (acidic) pH (KLINMAN™ 550A) as well as partially (KLINMAN 550PN) or fully neutralized (KLINMAN 550N) liquid forms. The low pH gives bulkiness to the powder formulation but requires little attention when mixed with alkaline additives.The product is an organophosphonic acid compound exhibiting excellent sequestration of metal ions at stoichiometric concentration and threshold inhibition of metal salt precipitation at sub-stoichiometric concentrations. The ability of KLINMAN-550 to deflocculate or disperse solid particles combined with its temperature and hydrolytic stability makes it a versatile ingredient for applications requiring efficient metal ion (like Fe²/Fe³) control.KLINMAN-550 exhibits the same performance characteristics as KLINMAN-500 (Refer literature available on request) in addition to that this product is a corrosion inhibitor in itself and sequestering agent.

“Threshold effect” is the ability of very small amounts of scale inhibitors to keep large quantities of scale forming minerals in soluble form. KLINMAN-550 are highly effective scale inhibitors working on threshold limit. This is due to KLINMAN-550 being adsorbed on the growth site of the scale forming minerals like Calcium, Magnesium, Strontium, Barium, and Silica etc. altering the growth pattern of the scale, reducing the speed of growth and distorting the crystals. The threshold inhibition effectiveness of KLINMAN-550 depends on conditions such as the type of scale forming mineral, water composition, super saturations, temperature, pH and the type of KLINMAN-550 itself.

Sequestration (or chelating) is the ability of the substance to form a stable water soluble complex with metal ions. The sequestration efficiency depends mainly on pH and the presence of other ions. The best comparison, however, can be made by the customer under actual use conditions.

Deflocculating or dispersion is the phenomenon that makes the agglomeration of growing crystals and other particulates more difficult. KLINMAN-550 have this property and also have the added attribute of maintaining such systems in a dispersed state over extended periods due to superior hydrolytic stability.

Corrosion occurs when metal is attacked by oxygen in water. KLINMAN-550 in combination with zinc or phosphates and other corrosion inhibitors are highly effective in inhibiting corrosion. The effect of these combinations is much greater than the effect of any component by itself.

KLINMAN-550 is highly resistant to hydrolysis over a broad range of pH and temperature. This is very important for liquid formulations or where the process liquid is at elevated temperatures.

Chlorine is a common oxidizer and biocide widely used in a variety of applications. Because KLINMAN-550 are stabilized with additives against chlorine (halogen) attack they perform maximum chlorine stability.
